A breakthrough of sorts

VADGY WOKE suddenly to the sound of telephone ringing. It had been a long night. She had only managed a couple of hours sleep and the phone startled her.

“Hello?” she whispered, still half asleep.

“Detective McVadge?”

“Yes”.

“It’s Tully down at the station. I’m sorry to wake you so early but we thought you would want to know straightaway. There’s been another incident. We think its Oliver again. We’ve got the victim here now and the boss thinks you should get down right away.” “

OK, I’ll be down there as quick as I can thanks” Vadgy replied.

“Maybe this time I’ll nail the bastard” Vadgy thought to herself as she slipped into her Givenchy robe and headed to the kitchen to make a coffee. As she scooped the Coffee Mate into the cup, she thought about Oliver. A man like that didn’t deserve to walk the streets. He didn’t deserve to live as far as Vadgy was concerned but she knew she would have to maintain her professionalism if she was going to keep this investigation on track. Perry had given her one last chance to solve the case and by God, she wasn’t going to let personal feeling get in the way of a conviction.

She showered quickly. “No time to wash my hair” she thought as she sprayed the dry shampoo through her thick blonde hair. She had a feeling today she would get that breakthrough she was looking for. Today she would wear the Halston pantsuit.

“Where is she?” Vadgy demanded as she walked into the station. “Interview Room 2, Detective McVadge” replied Constable Ellis “You look very nice today Detective McVadge if you don’t mind me saying”. “Shut up Ellis” Vadgy barked back as she stormed past. The last thing she needed was another young rookie developing a crush on her. Men had a tendency to fall at Vadgy’s feet and she was becoming tired of it.

Since things with Kensington had ended Vadgy had no real interest in men, unless they could do something for her. "A girl has got to use whatever the good Lord has given her to get ahead in the is world" she would say to herself.

Vadgy opened the door to the interview room and saw the young woman, hunched over a cup of coffee, her eyes circled with dark shadows. She looked up nervously from the table.

“Hi, I’m Detective McVadge, but you can call me Vadgy. I’m here to help you but you are going to have to be completely honest with me. I realise its painful but if we are going to get the guy who did this to you, I need to know everything.”

“I’ll tell you everything” she murmured, choking back the tears. “But you know, it wasn’t just one guy. There were two of them”.

Vadgy couldn’t believe what she was hearing. Two of them? So Oliver had found an accomplice. It seemed hard to believe. Oliver had always worked alone. “So he’s found another scumbag to help him with his dirty work” she thought.

“Don’t worry, we are gonna get both those bastards and when we do…well, they’ll be sorry they were every born. I promise you that.”
