A breakthrough of sorts

VADGY WOKE suddenly to the sound of telephone ringing. It had been a long night. She had only managed a couple of hours sleep and the phone startled her.

“Hello?” she whispered, still half asleep.

“Detective McVadge?”

“Yes”.

“It’s Tully down at the station. I’m sorry to wake you so early but we thought you would want to know straightaway. There’s been another incident. We think its Oliver again. We’ve got the victim here now and the boss thinks you should get down right away.” “

OK, I’ll be down there as quick as I can thanks” Vadgy replied.

“Maybe this time I’ll nail the bastard” Vadgy thought to herself as she slipped into her Givenchy robe and headed to the kitchen to make a coffee. As she scooped the Coffee Mate into the cup, she thought about Oliver. A man like that didn’t deserve to walk the streets. He didn’t deserve to live as far as Vadgy was concerned but she knew she would have to maintain her professionalism if she was going to keep this investigation on track. Perry had given her one last chance to solve the case and by God, she wasn’t going to let personal feeling get in the way of a conviction.

She showered quickly. “No time to wash my hair” she thought as she sprayed the dry shampoo through her thick blonde hair. She had a feeling today she would get that breakthrough she was looking for. Today she would wear the Halston pantsuit.

“Where is she?” Vadgy demanded as she walked into the station. “Interview Room 2, Detective McVadge” replied Constable Ellis “You look very nice today Detective McVadge if you don’t mind me saying”. “Shut up Ellis” Vadgy barked back as she stormed past. The last thing she needed was another young rookie developing a crush on her. Men had a tendency to fall at Vadgy’s feet and she was becoming tired of it.

Since things with Kensington had ended Vadgy had no real interest in men, unless they could do something for her. "A girl has got to use whatever the good Lord has given her to get ahead in the is world" she would say to herself.

Vadgy opened the door to the interview room and saw the young woman, hunched over a cup of coffee, her eyes circled with dark shadows. She looked up nervously from the table.

“Hi, I’m Detective McVadge, but you can call me Vadgy. I’m here to help you but you are going to have to be completely honest with me. I realise its painful but if we are going to get the guy who did this to you, I need to know everything.”

“I’ll tell you everything” she murmured, choking back the tears. “But you know, it wasn’t just one guy. There were two of them”.

Vadgy couldn’t believe what she was hearing. Two of them? So Oliver had found an accomplice. It seemed hard to believe. Oliver had always worked alone. “So he’s found another scumbag to help him with his dirty work” she thought.

“Don’t worry, we are gonna get both those bastards and when we do…well, they’ll be sorry they were every born. I promise you that.”

Titsy and Sympathy

The photos spilled out over the lounge. They all looked like nice girls. Nice girls who just got caught up with the wrong guy. And that guy was Cain Oliver.

Oliver had a reputation as a low rent gigolo. Up until now he hadn’t really shown up on Vadgy’s professional radar. Sure, she had seen him hauled in now and again, charged with solicitation, but that was nothing out of the ordinary. She had seen him led off, time after time, to be strip-searched, fingerprinted and charged having been arrested in the Haight Ashbury precinct yet again.

He was a pitiful character; entirely full of himself and for no damned good reason. “The worst combination of character flaws” Vadgy thought “arrogant AND stupid”. She had almost felt sorry for him. But he had committed the cardinal sin when he screwed with Titsy and sympathy was no longer on the menu.

Titsy was just one of many women Oliver had ‘done over’. She had thought it was something special. He had told her she was perfect, unique, “the one”. Poor Titsy had so badly wanted to hear those words, when they came tumbling out of Oliver’s mouth that first night they met, she believed him. How naïve she had been.

“Mess with Tisty and you mess with me” Vadgy murmured as she ran her long, manicured fingernails over Oliver’s most recent mug shot. Her life was all about revenge now. Until he was behind bars everything else was on hold.

You're So Vain

As she reversed her red Firebird Pontiac out of the squad parking lot, Vadgy glanced down at her Movado watch. It was late. It looked like she would have to pull another all-nighter if she was going to crack this case. She drove home, up and down the winding San Francisco streets, wondering how Titsy was tonight and silently vowing that she wouldn’t rest till she got justice for her.

Being promoted to detective had meant that Vadgy was able to surround herself with the things she loved. Her downtown apartment was fashionably decorated in her favourites shades of brown and orange. Only last week new carpet had been laid in the sunken lounge and as she slipped off her cork heeled platforms, her toes dug down into the shag pile. She walked over to the stereo, gin and tonic in hand, and set the needle on her Carly Simon album. “You’re So Vain” played as she looked down at the “Oliver” file which spilled over the tangerine modular lounge. “How apt” she thought.

As she started to sort through the hundreds of statements and photos, her cat “Lady” crept up onto her lap and nestled in. “Lady” had a particular fondness for the purple velour bell bottom jumpsuit Vadgy was wearing.

Vadgy had a lot of work to get through. She would have to miss tonight’s episode of Dallas. There was no time for TV while Titsy languished in the mental hospital and that bastard Oliver was still out there.

The one who got away

Vadgy marched back to her desk. As she passed by the other detectives she could feel their eyes burn into her. The scent of both envy and lust hung heavily in the air. “Screw them” she thought “I won’t be intimidated and I won’t back down. I owe it to Titsy to put this guy behind bars and damn it, I’m going to do it.”

Titsy had been Vadgy’s partner for 5 years and they were a formidable team. But now Titsy was on stress leave, holed up in mental institution. It was up to Vadgy to settle a couple of scores and get the bastard who put her there. She wasn’t going to let a bunch of misogynistic bastards on the force stand in her way.

She had come a long way since graduating from the Academy. Leaving Arkansas was a big step for 20 year old but Vadgy knew that a two-bit town like Hot Springs would never be enough for her. She wanted so much more from life and only a city like San Francisco could offer Vadgy everything she was looking for.

She enrolled in the San Francisco Police Academy in 1969. She was one of only three woman amongst 100 trainees. It was a tough year. There were no free rides. Vadgy knew she had to work harder than anyone else there if she was going to overcome the inevitable discrimination a woman with a 38-22-36 figure would be subjected to.

But Vadgy knew how to 'work it'. She was fitter and stronger than almost any other guy there but still, there were times when she was forced to use her feminine wiles to get another rung up the ladder. “A girl has got to use whatever resources she has at her disposal” she would think to herself. She wasn’t afraid to open an extra button on her tight trainee blouse if it meant a favour here or there.

SHE was in control and that was how she liked it. Her god-given beauty was hers to use to her advantage and no man was going to get the better of her. That was until she met, Kensington Pride.

Kensington was the youngest of the Pride family. The Prides were a well known, old-money San Franciscan family. Generation after generation had built their wealth with mango farms. When she met Kensington, everything changed and no matter how hard she tried, she would never be the same again. Nor would she ever look at a mango the same way again.....

But that was years ago and Kensington was well and truly gone. As much as it pained Vadgy to admit it, he was in the past. The future was all she could focus on now and getting Oliver behind bars where he belonged.

Vadgy's Revenge

Vadgy marched into the chief’s office with the look of fierce determination her colleagues had become so used to. Police Chief Perry Anderson looked up wearily from his desk.

“Damn it Perry!” she growled. “You won’t shut me down on this case!! While this bastard is out there women are not safe to walk the streets. Let me do my job!”

“Listen Vadgy, you and I both know you are too emotionally involved in this case. I’ve assigned Harvey to the case and that’s the end of it!”

“Harvey is damned fool. You and I both know it! Just give me one more week and I swear I can wrap this case up Perry.”

Perry sighed in resignation. “Ok, Vadgy, you know I can never say no to you.” How well she knew that. But that was in the past and now she had to focus on this case.

Oliver was not going to get away with this. Yes, she would be professional but damn it, he was going to pay for what he had done to Titsy.

As she strode determinedly out of Perry’s office, Vadgy hips swayed enticingly in her figure hugging pencil skirt. “That woman will be the death of me” he thought to himself. “But what a way to go”
